Garnet
Garnets come in shades of red, from very light to deep red. The word garnet might have two possible origins, from the Latin granatus, a reference to the Punica Granatum, or Pomegranate, a plant with red seeds similar in shape, size and colour to some garnet crystals; or from the Middle English name Gernet meaning "dark red".
The garnet is the birthstone for January.
