Amethyst

Amethyst is a form of the mineral quartz and is usually purple, from pale lavender to a very deep reddish purple. But it can also occur in other colours, including green. The name comes from the Ancient Greek a- ("not") and methustos ("intoxicated"), a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. The amethyst is said to bring good luck and to radiate love.

It is the traditional birthstone for February.
